Springfield mayor holding off on COVID mask mandate as cases rise

Springfield’s mayor is holding off, for now, on asking the city council to reinstitute the city’s mask mandate to combat the spread of COVID-19.

Comments on the issue Tuesday and Wednesday from Mayor Jim Langfelder and city spokeswoman Julia Frevert, respectively, came after Illinois and federal health officials said this week that everyone, vaccinated against COVID-19 or not, should mask up in public indoor areas with “substantial” or “high” transmission of coronavirus disease.

Those transmission categories include Sangamon County and most adjacent counties, based on growing numbers of positive COVID-19 tests and test-positivity rates.

Sangamon, Logan, Cass, Macon, Schuyler and Tazewell counties all are classified with substantial COVID-19 transmission by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. High-transmission counties include Christian, Macoupin, Mason and Morgan.
