Some BrightFarms Salad Is Being Linked To A Multi-State Outbreak
A multi-state salmonella outbreak has been linked to a brand of salad greens by BrightFarms. Although an official recall has not yet been announced, the Food & Drug Administration is urging individuals to not consume if they have the salad in their possession.
After eight illnesses were reported, the FDA started a traceback investigation to determine what product may have caused the illnesses. Eventually, evidence indicated that the outbreak is linked to BrightFarms Sunny Crunch Salad, a product that was produced in Rochelle, Illinois.
Five people of the eight reported cases purchased the salad brand before they got sick and the investigation found that a specific farm in Rochelle, Illinois is likely the source of the infections. The illnesses were caused by Salmonella, a food borne infection that is particularly harmful to the elderly, newborns, and individuals with otherwise compromised immune systems.
The Sunny Crunch salads are packed in plastic clamshell containers and are labeled as being “fresh from Rochelle, IL.” They were distributed across Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana. To be extra cautious, check your refrigerators and throw away this product if you have it. If you have already used these products before becoming away of the contamination, sanitize any surface it may have come into contact with.
This investigation is ongoing to see if any other BrightFarms products are impacted by traces of salmonella.
