Memorial Health System will move the annual Festival of Trees holiday event from the Illinois State Fairgrounds to multiple locations in downtown Springfield this year.

The goal is to make the event “more accessible in a central and public location,” according to a news release from the hospital group.

The holiday event first started in 1989. It draws tens of thousands of attendees annually and will be held on two consecutive Saturdays in November. Proceeds benefit Memorial Medical Center Foundation, and the festival has raised $5.5 million to fund healthcare grants relating to research and education, per the release.

“Many families have made the festival part of their holiday tradition year after year,” said Melissa Hansen Schmadeke, executive director of the Memorial Medical Center Foundation. “Now, they can continue that tradition in a new location while they help our friends and families who have had to struggle to keep their businesses open during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
