Champaign — It took only four minutes on Tuesday afternoon for Illinois assistant coach Chester Frazier to send a congratulatory tweet linking to an Instagram page. Of course, both posts were vague so as not to cause a hiring breach, but there was still a fairly clear air of excitement.

There is a reason.

With a commitment from 4-star guard Jayden Epps in 2022, Illinois has been promoted to the third-largest recruitment class in the country after North Carolina and Ohio at 247 Sports. Epps chose Irina from a group that included Kansas, UConn, and North Carolina.

Epps is Illinois’ third commitment in the 2022 class, with Frazier being the primary recruiter for this month’s second commitment. Epps joins fellow security guard Sencire Harris and 3-star prospect Reggie Bass, a 4-star recruit who committed on July 2.

Epps, who plays the senior season at the Combine Academy (NC), did not win the junior season at Kingsfolk (Va.) After being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A 6-foot-2, 195-pound guard led the Bulldog to the state championship as a sophomore, averaging 26 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals, and a Virginia pilot’s All-Tidewater Player of the Year. Was selected for. The team that won the title.
