CWLP offers LED upgrade rebate program for Springfield Il businesses
City Water, Light and Power is bringing back its light-upgrade rebate program for the 11,000 businesses it serves.
The CWLP rebate program dubbed “CityLights” will rebate commercial customers for up to $10,000 a year or 35% of the cost of installing interior LED lights. The rebate is based on wattage savings, according to a CWLP press release.
The program is designed to help businesses that still use fluorescent lights, which have likely reached their “maximum efficiency,” CWLP energy services manager Gary Hurley said.
“This rebate may be a benefit to them so they can have funding to help absorb some of those costs,” Hurley said.
T12 to T8 graded fluorescent tubes can be retrofitted to become LED compatible, but T5 tubes require a fixture change, which can be costly, Hurley said. Fluorescent lighting will likely start failing, even the T12 grade, the phase out for which began in 2009, he said.
According to a fact sheet from the U.S. Department of Energy, LED lights are 75% more energy efficient and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting. Hurley said LED lights will “likely” become the federal minimum for businesses in the coming years.
Businesses that utilize CWLP services must apply for the rebate prior to buying any equipment or lights and must provide a cost estimate and an approximate number of lights. After installation, CWLP will conduct an inspection to ensure standards are met, Hurley said.
