BUSINESS LEADERS, MUNICIPALITIES OPPOSE LARGEST ENERGY RATE HIKE IN ILLINOIS HISTORY – Decatur Tribune

SPRINGFIELD – A broad coalition of business owners, associations and municipalities have issued a letter in opposition to Gov J.B. Pritzker’s proposed energy omnibus legislation. If passed, Illinoisans would face the largest rate hike in Illinois history, as many only begin to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The legislation would result in ratepayers, businesses and communities facing a minimum of $700 million in additional energy costs, including $215 million to support new programs passed without their input. This will create higher energy costs for low-income families and upend Illinois’ competitive energy marketplace, which currently boasts a reliable grid that incentivizes businesses to invest and remain in Illinois.

Crafted without input from the business community, the legislation lacks needed transparency or data outlining costs for every fee, mandate and regulation contained in the bill. As a result, these costs will only grow. Further, business organizations have asked for economic, reliability and rate impact studies, but have been ignored.

Ahead of lawmakers’ return to Springfield this week, in which they are expected to take up this proposal, business leaders and municipalities issued a letter to Gov. Pritzker voicing their opposition. Signatories of the letter include:

Illinois Retail Merchants Association

Illinois Manufacturers’ Association

Building Owners and Managers Association of Chicago
